She started training and showing horses and dogs at a young age and her professional life has always involved animals. She is recognized internationally as a sea turtle expert but her behavior studies have also included West Indian manatees, right whales, Beluga whales, crocodiles, gopher tortoises, and many other endangered species. She has also studied native village dogs in India and feral dogs in Brazil. She has been awarded many US Department of Defense awards for her animal studies and was named the 2010 MS Wildlife Federation Conservationist of the Year. Dena also developed an award-winning canine program for the USACE to eradicate nuisance birds inhabiting lock and dams by using trained border collies. Since her first rescued dog when she was 17, Dena has been an avid dog rescue advocate and has personally rescued and rehabilitated over 250 dogs from a wide range of serious, life-threatening situations including neglect and abuse. For some of these same dogs, she has achieved top level and national titles in various dog sports such as agility, obedience, rally, and tracking. After retiring from the USACE, she formally established 3D Dogs Consulting LLC to provide full-time consulting for specialized services in dog behavior modification and training.
