My life philosophy: Do what I say and say what I do. I am an educator. I always have been. For me, the answer to all societal problems is better education; be it formal, in a school setting or informal, from those we encounter as we travel through life. I teach both humans and dogs. Regardless the species, there are three basic rules I follow in my classes. Always: 1. assume positive intent. 2. make it easy to learn. 3. be prepared and on time. Since 1994, I have been teaching college students art history (and occasionally studio art such as drawing, painting, and design). In 2012, I added professional dog training to my schedule of classes. In doing so, the content of some of my courses changed as did the ratio of kinesthetic learning to auditory/visual learning but my core educational values did not. My philosophy for training dogs follows scientifically proven and emotionally sound methods of training using the +R (adding reinforcement) quadrant of operant conditioning. Specifically, I use a clicker as a bridge to mark a desired behavior, and then follow it with a reward. Dog training is a plastic field. It is constantly changing and requires the effective educator to remain current by following peer reviewed journals, attending conferences and lectures, and practicing new methods under the guidance of seasoned professionals. My passion for all things dog makes it a joy for me to do so.
