Plucky Paws, LLC

As a KPA-CTP and CPDT-KA certified trainer, I provide private in-home pet training with specializations in behavior modification, adopted dogs, and family-friendly services. As a Certified Humane Education Specialist with fifteen years of teaching experience, I use the arts to teach children of all ages about important topics like responsible pet ownership, dog bite prevention, and companion animal welfare. My two rescue dogs, Marmalade and Butterscotch, visit a variety of community locations as the official Plucky Paws Therapy Dogs. Marmalade holds Canine Good Citizen and Community Canine titles with the AKC, and Butterscotch surpassed the odds to earn his CGC title as a blind-deaf senior dog.

I'm a trainer with the Puppy Jake Foundation, providing socialization and behavior modification for service pups in training. I am passionate about companion animal welfare, and I volunteer with adoptable dogs at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and the PAWS program at the Iowa Correctional Institution for Women. I have previously volunteered with the ARL's humane education department and TheraPets program. I'm a member of several prominent professional organizations, am involved in ongoing education, and am currently completing two certifications in canine behavior. During 2018 I'm engaging in continuing education with Karen Pryor Academy, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary, Pet Professional Guild, Denver Zoo, the Downtown Aquarium in Denver, and Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo. The Plucky Paws logo reflects my practice of planting the seeds of curiosity and knowledge and encouraging growth, so that pets and kids can shine to their fullest potential. As a relationship-based trainer, my training philosophy centers on strengthening and celebrating the bond between pet guardians and their dogs. I use only modern, progressive methods based in behavior science. Compassionate training strategies are enjoyable, effective, and promote a rewarding relationship founded on trust and mutual respect. I take pride in using family-friendly techniques that are safe for everyone in your household to practice, including young children. Training methods that are positive and fun are the only methods that are appropriate for use in a family setting. We listen to our dogs, we respect our dogs, and we acknowledge that they are on a unique path of self discovery, just as we are! I offer Behavior Solutions and Basic, Intermediate, and Continuing Skills packages in coaching and day training formats. I also offer my Plucky Parents training package for expecting and new parents, and my Family Training package for households with older children who can participate in the training process. I provide customized in-home humane education for kids of all ages, including Pet Loss Support consultation and Fear of Dogs consultation, as well as therapy dog Birthday Pawty entertainment.
